Saginaw, Michigan.
Beloved father, grandfather and great-grandfather passed away Saturday, April 14, 2012 at his home. Age 93 years. The son of the late Maurice Thompson and Margaret Fern (Gabel) van Benschoten, Harvey was born September 29, 1918 in Saginaw, Michigan. He married Daisy Margaret Ohland on October 1, 1950. She predeceased him April 23, 1987. Harvey graduated from Arthur Hill High School, the University of Michigan and received his L.L.B. from the University of Michigan Law School. He practiced law since 1943 and had formed the law firm van Benschoten & van Benschoten with his brothers Duane and Maurice. He later practiced with his sons, Mark and John. Harvey was a member and past President of Saginaw Bar Association, the American Trial Lawyers Association (formerly known as National Association of Claimant’s Compensation Attorneys) and the Michigan Trial Lawyers Association. Harvey loved the law and was passionate about representing injured people and those who needed him the most.
Surviving are two sons, one daughter, Mark and Debra van Benschoten, Linwood; Margaret Holman Jensen and Paul Jensen, Birmingham, Michigan; John and Peggy van Benschoten, Saginaw; six grandchildren, Megan and Sean van Benschoten, Jennifer (David) Jones, Christopher van Benschoten, Bennett and Gregory Holman; a great-grandchildren; two nephews and one niece, Duane van Benschoten, Richard van Benschoten and Marcia Andrews. Harvey was preceded in death by two brothers, Duane and Maurice van Benschoten.
Funeral service will take place 11:00 a.m. Wednesday, April 18, 2012 at The Snow Funeral Home, 3775 N. Center Rd., (between Shattuck and McCarty). Interment will follow in Roselawn Memorial Gardens. Friends may call at the funeral home where the family will be present on Tuesday from 2:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. and on Wednesday from 10:00 a.m. until time of service. In lieu of flowers, those planning an expression of sympathy may wish to consider memorials to the Saginaw City Rescue Mission.
