Passed away Tuesday evening May 15, 2012 at the Cartwright Residence in Saginaw after a brief illness at the age of 91 years. Sophie was born July 9, 1920 in Saginaw, MI to the late Jacob and Amalia (Dietz) Gross and has resided in this area all of her life. Sophie was a member of St. Agnes Catholic Church in Freeland; she had graduated from Arthur Hill High School in 1938 and was an avid quilter. On September 28, 1940 Sophie married George C. Corbat; he predeceased her on July 6, 2004. Sophie is survived by a son; George (Lillian) Corbat Jr. of Freeland, five grandchildren; Jeff and wife Jessica, Scott and wife Tamsen, Michelle and friend Paul, Brigett and husband Kevin and Jeremy. Eight grandchildren; Haley, Joshua, Sydney, Tyler, Kyle, Tessa, Maxwell and Griffin. One sister; Helen (Angelo) Naples of Saginaw, two sisters-in-law; Beatrice Gross of Hemlock and Delores Kocsis of MIdland. Sophie was predeceased by four brothers; Henry, Chris, Jacob and John Gross and three sisters; Catherine Herman, Mollie Wanner and Elizabeth Kuelske.

 

Funeral services will be held 11:00 a.m. Friday May 18, 2012 at St. Agnes Catholic Church, Freeland. Rev. Fr. Robert DeLand will officiate with burial to follow in Westside Cemetery in Freeland. Friends may call at the Cunningham/Taylor Funeral Home, 310 E. Washington St., Freeland on Thursday from 2:00-4:00 & 6:00-8:00 p.m. and at the church on Friday from 10:00 a.m. until time of service. A wake service will be held 7:00 p.m. Thursday evening at the funeral home. Those planning an expression of sympathy are asked to consider Visiting Nurse of Saginaw or St. Agnes Catholic Church, Freeland.
