 Age 85 years, died Tuesday, June 26, 2012 in Bay Medical Care Facility with her family by her side following a brief illness.  She was born February 14, 1927 to the late Isaac and Dora (Shinaver) Powell in Bay City.  For over 25 years, Esther was the manager at the One Hour Martinizing Store on Euclid Avenue.  Esther attended St. John the Evangelist Church in Essexville and was a member of the F.O.E. Aerie 1010 Auxiliary.  She loved to cook and bake and cooked at many functions of the Eagles.  Esther enjoyed playing cards, cake decorating, sewing and helped others with their alterations.  “She had a loud bark but a bigger heart”.  She was predeceased by her husband, Virgil VanHurk in March of 1999.

 She is survived by her daughter: Donna (Wayne) Leonard; her granddaughters:  Kayla and Carla Leonard; her brother, Roy (Irene) Powell; her sister, Ruth Powell; her nieces and nephews; and her very close friends:  Josephine Leonard and Claudia Warsaw.

 Besides her parents and husband, she was preceded in death by her brother, Eugene Powell in 2000.

 The Funeral Liturgy will be celebrated Friday, June 29, 2012 at 10:00 am in St. John the Evangelist Church.  Esther will lie in state in church Friday after 9:00 am.  Rev. Ricky M. Varner will preside and interment will follow in St. Patrick Cemetery.  The F.O. E. Auxiliary will have a memorial service Thursday at 6:45pm followed by a Vigil Prayer Service at 7:00 pm.  Visiting hours with the family will be Thursday from 2:00 pm until 8:00 pm at the W. A. Trahan Funeral Chapel.
