William Elbers, 80, of Reese, went to be with his Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ, early Sunday morning, March 7, 2010. He was born January 19, 1930 in Reese, son of the late Leonard and Mabel (Blaine) Elbers. He served his country with the U.S. Army during the Korean War from 1951 -1953 and was a member of the American Legion Post #139 in Reese. On May 14, 1958 he married the former Betty Luther and together they would have celebrated fifty-two years of marriage this coming May. Bill and Betty wintered in Bradenton, Florida for several years. Bill was a farmer all of his life and enjoyed watching and participating in sports, going to deer hunting camp and playing cards. He was a member of the Reese United Methodist Church and also served on the Denmark Township Board for many years.
Left to cherish his memory is his wife Betty, his three wonderful children, spouses, and grandchildren, Diane and Dennis Fielbrandt and their children; Stephanie Hellebuyck and her husband Mark, Eric Fielbrandt and Melissa, and Jeffrey Fielbrandt; David and Terie Elbers and their children; Michael, Jacob and Ian and Roger and Julie Elbers and their children; Jordan, Brendan and William. Also surviving is his brother Bob Elbers and his wife Sue, two sisters, Marilyn and Verne Spiekerman and Carole and Don Bricker, his in-laws, Nick and Sharon Stockmeyer, David and Cindy Luther, Richard Luther and many nieces, nephews, aunts, cousins and friends.
A service to celebrate Bill’s life will take place at 11 a.m. Thursday, March 11, 2010 from the Reese United Methodist Church. Pastor Jon Gougeon will officiate with burial to take place at 2 p.m. in the Denmark Township Cemetery in Reese. Military graveside honors will be presented by the U.S. Army Honor Guard and the American Legion Post #139 Reese. Mr. Elbers’ family will receive friends at the Ware-Smith-Woolever Funeral Home, 9940 Saginaw St. in Reese on Wednesday from 2-8 p.m. and at the church on Thursday from 10 a.m. until time of services.
