Survived By: Surviving Mr. Westphal are his daughter,Carol Pett of Saginaw; daughter-in-law, Shelia Westphal of Saginaw; three grandsons, Kevin, Joe, and John; two sisters, Meta Hyatt of Midland, and Irene Westphal of Redford; brother, Earl(Peggy) Westphal of Midland; several nieces and nephews. Herbert was preceded in death by his parents; wife, Ruth O. Westphal; son, Gerald Westphal; and son-in-law, Bruce Pett; and nine siblings.
Affiliations: He was an active member of Houghton Lake United Methodist Church and the American Legion. He enjoyed gardening and working in his yard.

Herbert  Frederick  Westphal, 85, of  Houghton Lake passed away on Sunday January 29, 2017 at Henry Ford Hospital in Detroit.

Herbert was born on August 8, 1931 in Midland, Michigan to William and Lydia(Krentz) Westphal. Herbert grew up and graduated from school in Midland.  He served as a Cpl in the Army during the Korean War.  Herbert worked as a Machine Operator for General Motors from which he retired. On March 19, 1955 in Midland Herbert was married to Ruth O. Schultz.  He was an active member of Houghton Lake United Methodist Church and the American Legion.  He enjoyed gardening and working in his yard.

Surviving Mr. Westphal are his daughter,Carol Pett of Saginaw; daughter-in-law, Shelia Westphal of Saginaw; three grandsons, Kevin, Joe, and John; two sisters, Meta Hyatt of Midland, and Irene Westphal of Redford; brother, Earl(Peggy) Westphal of Midland; several nieces and nephews.  Herbert was preceded in death by his parents; wife, Ruth O. Westphal; son, Gerald Westphal; and son-in-law, Bruce Pett; and nine siblings. 

Memorial services for Herbert Frederick Westphal will be conducted at Houghton Lake United Methodist Church at 11:00am Saturday February 11. 2017.  Interment will be in the Houghton Lake United Methodist Church Memorial Gardens.      Memorial contributions in memory of Herbert are asked to be directed to the Houghton Lake United Methodist Church.  Christler Funeral Home, Houghton Lake Chapel is serving the family.  Condolences can be sent to the family online at www.christler-holdship.com
