Benjamin, John Arnold,
Beloved father and grandfather passed away Monday, April 17, 2017 at Shields Comfort Care Center, following a lengthy illness. Age 93 years. John was born August 16, 1923 in Saginaw, the son of the late Arthur W. and Letitia Arnold Benjamin. He graduated from Arthur Hill High School in 1941 and served over three years in the U.S. Army during World War II, including 18 months in Europe where he earned a bronze star for The Rhineland campaign. At war’s end he attended the universities of London and Manchester in England and then graduated from The University of Michigan with a bachelor’s and master’s degrees. In 1949, he married Jane Stickrod in Kansas City, MO. She predeceased him on October 16, 1966. On August 24, 1967, he married Elizabeth McColgan. She predeceased him January 9, 2016. Surviving are a son David Arthur Benjamin of Lansing and a daughter Sheryl Ann and her spouse Manny Sanchez of Saginaw; three grandchildren, Troy Sanchez and his spouse Emily of Houston, TX; Kyle Sanchez and his fiancé Daniell Teller of Houston, TX; Jane Benjamin of Grand Rapids. Also surviving are many wonderful nieces and nephews and their children. He was predeceased by his brother Howard; his sister Ruth Rohloff; brother in-law Roy McColgan, Jr; brother in-law Arthur McColgan and his wife Sue.
After graduating from the U of M, John worked as news director of WUOM-FM, Ann Arbor and then as director of The University of Michigan Extension Service in Saginaw. He retired from the U of M in 1981 after 32 years of service, and then worked in sales for eight years at Burdick’s Seed House. He was a member of The First Congregational Church. He was active in community affairs, serving as president of The Saginaw Kiwanis Club, vice-president of The Area Health Education Center, and a director of The Saginaw Valley Council of Campfire Girls and The Adult Education Association of Michigan. He was a life member of the Germania Town & Country Club, American Legion Post #439, The Association of American Geographers, Phi Kappa Phi (a national honorary society), and Sigma Alpha Epsilon fraternity. He was also a member of The Saginaw County Club. He was an apt student of the limerick, loved golf, rose gardening, reading, and playing the piano.

Honoring Mr. Benjamin’s wishes cremation has taken place. A Memorial Service will take place 5:00 p.m. Saturday, April 22, 2017 at The Snow Funeral Home, 3775 N. Center Rd. (between Shattuck and McCarty). Rev. John R. Johnson will officiate. Military Services will be conducted by American Legion Post # 439. A private entombment will take place in Oakwood Memorial Mausoleum. Friends may visit at the funeral home where the family will be present on Saturday from 4:00 p.m. until time of service.
