(Victoria) Wirt, a brother-in-law Dr. Robert Lee and two sisters-in-law Julianna Jaffe and Phyliss Jaffe.

Stephen Mark Wirt passed away peacefully on July 16, 2017, with his loving family by his side.

Steve was born in Bay City, Michigan, on March 9, 1947, to Alice and Jack Wirt, who preceded him in death. Steve earned his Bachelor of Science degree in business from Eastern Michigan University.  It was there that he met and married Dena Jaffe. They raised two boys: Matthew Aaron Wirt, who preceded him in death, and Daniel Jordan Wirt, who lives in Chicago with his wife, Jordan.  After a 10-year relocation to the Detroit area, Steve and Dena moved back to Bay City, where they chose to stay and raise their boys while beginning an equipment leasing business. The business that they started 32 years ago in a spare bedroom, Wirt Financial Services, has grown and evolved into the Wirt-Rivette Group with Clarence Rivette as partner.

As CEO of the company, Steve never stopped working to find different ways of putting investments together to make a project work. Steve and his wife were committed to making the community they live in better, something they both learned from their parents. Steve and Dena were instrumental in supporting local organizations that worked to do the same. As strong supporters of the United Way, they donated their building in downtown Bay City to the organization, which maintains its offices. They have also been generous supports of The Alice and Jack Wirt Library, The Alice and Jack Wirt Bay Area Women’s Center, the Boys and Girls Club, and The Bay Area Community Foundation.  They established special funds at local higher education institutes, as well as establishing scholarships at many of Michigan(Michigan’s public) Universities.

Education was very important to Steve, and he was quick to help a student with unforeseen needs. Steve is a long time member of the Elks. He was a member of Temple Israel, where he served on the dues and assessment committee for many years. He also served on the “cheva hakdisha” committee and on the building committee.

After recovering from prostate cancer, Steve took to walking.  Not one to do anything in a small way, Steve would walk outside or on a treadmill for the whole day, his cell phone at the ready. He could complete a full day of business in this manner.

His diagnosis of terminal brain cancer did not deter him.  Having lost a great deal of strength and function on his left side, he continued to work as hard as his body would allow. He challenged all therapists that he worked with, never complaining, and never giving up.  When Daniel was married last summer, the family was blessed to have Steve and Dena walk down the aisle with their son.

Besides his wife and son, Steve is survived by his brother Doug and Victoria Wirt, brother-in-law Robert Lee; Niece Michelle, Doug, Natalie and Zachery Wexler; nephew Joshua Lee, Niece Liza Wirt; Sister-in-laws Phyliss Jaffe and Julianna Jaffe; special friends, the Harold and Ruth Blumenstein family, the Clarence and Sara Rivette family, the Donna and Mike Bacigalogo and family;  and the very special friends that cared for Steve with so much love through his battle, Evens Bernard, and Magali Wooley.
