Survived By: On May 4, 1935 she married Frederick L. Smith in St. James Church and he preceded her in death on October 11, 2000. Surviving are her daughter and son: Jo Ann M Weiler and Frederick J. (Joan) Smith; two grandchildren: Keith "Whitey" Weiler, Cindy Tarlo; her great-granddaughter: Melissa Hofmann; a great-great granddaughter, Kaylee Wiedyk; and special friend, Thomas Irving
Affiliations: Member of St. Jude Thaddeus Parish (St. John Church), an honorary life member of its Altar Society, and the League of Catholic Women and Men.

  Leona M. Smith, our dear mother, grandmother, great-grandmother and great-great-grandmother passed away peacefully Thursday, August 31, 2017 at Bay Shores Nursing Center at the age of 100 years.  She was born February 21, 1917 to the late Frank R. and Julia (Gunther) Rytlewski in Bay County where she resided all of her life.  Leona was a member of St. Jude Thaddeus Parish (St. John Church), an honorary life member of its Altar Society, and the League of Catholic Women and Men. 

 

  On May 4, 1935 she married Frederick L. Smith in St. James Church and he preceded her in death on October 11, 2000.  Surviving are her daughter and son:  Jo Ann M Weiler and Frederick J. (Joan) Smith; two grandchildren:  Keith “Whitey” Weiler, Cindy Tarlo; her great-granddaughter: Melissa Hofmann; a great-great granddaughter, Kaylee Wiedyk; and special friend, Thomas Irving. 

 

  Besides her parents and husband, she was preceded in death by her granddaughter, Debbie Hofmann.

 

  The Smith family is grateful to everyone at Bay Shores Nursing Center for the care and compassion they provided to Leona.

 

  The Funeral Liturgy will be celebrated Saturday, September 9, 2017 at 10:00 am in St. Jude Thaddeus Parish (St. John Church) 614 Pine St., Essexville. Leona will lie in state in church Saturday after 9:00 am.   Rev. Dale A. Orlik will preside and interment will follow in St. Patrick Cemetery.  Memorial contributions may be designated for St. Jude Thaddeus Parish.  Visiting hours with the family will be Friday, September 8, 2017 from 4:00 pm until 8:00 pm, with the Vigil Prayer Service at 7:00 in the W.
