Beloved husband, father and grandfather, Edward Paul Sowa passed away at Wellspring Lutheran Services, Frankenmuth, Michigan on October 4, 2017; age 81 years.  Ed was born October 21, 1935, the son of Blazej (William) and Anna Sowa near Tillsonburg, Ontario, Canada.  He married Betty Johnson on October 17, 1959, in Listowel, Ontario; she survives him.


Ed received his bachelor’s degree from the University of Western Ontario but attended its affiliate, Waterloo Lutheran College.  In 1960 he began his career with Agrico Canada at London, Ontario, transferring to their Reese plant in 1972.  He never changed companies, but the company changed names many times during his career.  He retired in 2003 from Agrium but did special projects until 2011 and was instrumental in the production of micronutrients.  He was a past president of the Frankenmuth Lions Club, former member of the Frankenmuth Arts Council and was a present member of the Frankenmuth Gemutlichkeit Club.  Ed enjoyed gardening, traveling and woodcarving.  After his retirement, he took up watercoloring.


Ed is survived by his wife Betty, daughter, Sandra (Stefan) Weinert of Pendleton, Indiana, and son, David (Christina) Sowa of Wyoming, Michigan; grandchildren, Alexandra Weinert, Andrew Weinert and Douglas Weinert, step-grandson, Joshua Smith. Also survived by his sister, Jennie Urbanowicz, Brantford, Ontario, and many nieces and nephews.


Ed was predeceased by his parents, brother Theodore Sowa, infant brother Leo Sowa, brother-in-law Richard Urbanowicz.  He was also predeceased by his high school best friend, Arnold Stover.


Funeral services will take place on Saturday, October 7, 2017 at 11:00 a.m. at Cederberg Funeral Home of Frankenmuth, 590 N. Franklin St.  Rev. Shawn Fenske will officiate with cremation to follow.  Ed’s family will receive visitors at the funeral home on Friday from 4:00 to 8:00 p.m. and on Saturday from 10:00 a.m. until the time of service.  Those planning an expression of sympathy may wish to consider memorials to the American Cancer Society or the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation.
