Gerald Thomas Sylvester, 80, of Linwood, Michigan passed away suddenly at home on Wednesday, October 18, 2017. He is survived by his wife, Betty (Reder), whom he married November 22, 1958. Jerry is also survived by his children: Michelle Sylvester, Carla Sylvester-Davis, Kim Marie (Sylvester) Appold and Raymond Krueger ( of Jer’s best buds), Samantha (Sylvester) Schnepf, and Brad and Kim (Bates) Sylvester. Papa’s grandchildren: Christopher Guntermann, Lesley Stanley, Shay (Appold) & Jason Podleski, Evan Appold & Alex Kuch, Carmen Krueger, Quinton Krueger, Elexia Sylvester, Dylan Schnepf, Reed Schnepf, Kalysta Sylvester. Papa’s great grandchildren: Maddox, Hudson, and Sadie Podleski. Brother/Brother-in-law to Shirley (Sylvester) Charbonneau, Nancy (Sylvester) and Thomas Hoerauf, Kathleen (Sylvester) Linda and Rob Beckrow, Meretta (LaPan) Sylvester. Brother and Sister In-laws: Bernard and Gayle (Dunning) Reder, Marlene (Reder) and Richard Charbeneau.  Jerry aka “Big Jer” enjoyed many outdoor activities such as gardening, golfing, hunting, and fishing with his many beloved family and friends. He was an avid grandfather, as he would be the most vocal fan at any of his grandkids sporting events. He loved his thespian grandkids equally as he attended every play, musical, and recital. He gladly hosted family gatherings and holidays as he loved to cook especially his world-famous Chicken Noodle and Czernina soups, which paired well with his homemade wine. He enjoyed the casino and never met a blackjack table he didn’t like. Jerry attended Delta and CMU, and retired from The Dow Chemical Company in 1992. Jerry was a volunteer fireman for Beaver Township Fire Department and also the Commander of the American Legion Post #239 in Crump. He is also survived by many nieces, nephews, and special friends. Jerry was predeceased by his Parents: Emery and Angeline (Stosik) Sylvester. Siblings: Robert, Donald (Iva), Emery Jr. (Donna), Richard (Violet), Leonard, William, and Patricia. Son-in-law: Gary M. Stanley. Father and Mothers in-law: Carl, Elizabeth (Rezler) and Betty (Beetham) Reder.  In Jerry’s honor, Funeral Mass will be celebrated on Monday, October 23, 2017 at 11 am from the Prince of Peace Parish (St. Valentine Campus) with Rev. Fr. Nicholas Coffaro presiding with inurnment in St. Valentine Cemetery. Friends may call at the Rivertown Funeral Chapel on Sunday, October 22, 2017 from 1-8 pm. A Vigil Service will be held Sunday evening at 7 pm at the funeral chapel. On Monday, Jerry will lie in state at the church from 10 am until time of service. Papa Jerry was always there to help, and was a man of few worries. He reassured everyone with his signature catchphrase: “There’s no situation I can’t handle”
