Hazel Marlene (Nolan) Hales, age 79, of Clare, passed away surrounded by her family on November 11, 2017, at Green Acres Assisted Living in Mt. Pleasant, Michigan.  She was born the daughter of Delbert LeRoy Nolan and Lois Marcella (Fox) Nolan on April 25, 1938 in Gladwin, Michigan.  She lived most of her life in the Clare area.  Marlene married the love of her life, Glenn Hales on August 14, 1954.  She worked as special education secretary for the Clare Gladwin Intermediate School District for approximately 13 years.  During that time, while raising three children with Glenn, she attended Central Michigan University and graduated in December 1978 with a Bachelor of Science degree in Education with an Elementary Teaching Certificate. She was also a member of Phi Kappa Phi. Marlene took a position with Central Michigan University working in the advancement office from January 1979 until she retired in April 1992. Following retirement, she enjoyed spending time working on her and Glenn’s farm, vacationing at their cottage in Manistique, Michigan and attending her grand and great grandchildren’s many extracurricular school and non-school activities. She also had a passion for researching the family tree for both Glenn’s side and her own side of the family, for which her children and grandchildren are very grateful.  Marlene had an adventurous spirit. She earned her private pilot license at the age of 50 and achieved a perfect score on the written examination.  However, her adventures never took her too far from the small town of Clare where she grew up.  She loved Clare and happily gave back by serving on the Clare Cemetery Board for 14 years.

Left to cherish her memory are her children, Mike (Mary) Hales of Farwell, Mark (Tracy) Hales of Rockford, Michelle (Jeff) Thompson of Farwell, her brother Delbert (Virginia) Nolan, Jr. of Hamilton, Montana, eight grandchildren, and seventeen great-grandchildren.  She was preceded in death by her husband Glenn Hales, grandson Matthew Hales, mother Lois (Fox) Nolan, and father Delbert Nolan.  She will be dearly missed by those she leaves behind.

Her family is especially grateful to Barbara Smock, Darlyn Turner, and her caregivers at Green Acres Assisted Living in Mt. Pleasant who took exceptional care of her and loved her as their own grandmother.
