                Michael (Mike) Robert Carstens of Freeland, departed this world December 12, 2017. He was born to Calvin Zeno Carstens and Dorothy Marion (Ranney) Carstens on March 12, 1946 in Bay City, Michigan. 

At an early age, Mike excelled at both mechanical and musical endeavors, continuing to pursue both fields during his military career, playing impromptu jazz cornet at various military locations on and off base.  As a teenager, he was an excellent athlete, lettering in football, baseball, and basketball, while also delivering the DETROIT NEWS to more than 450 customers.

 Mike graduated from Pinconning Area High School in 1964, attended Western Michigan University in Kalamazoo, and joined the United States Air Force where he served for 10 years at maintaining diesel power for various military bases in Germany and also radar installations in Rapid City, South Dakota, and Calumet, Michigan.  Staff Sgt. Carstens served also in Southeast Asia during the Vietnam War and was twice awarded the Bronze Star for valor.         

Mike was a licensed master electrician, pilot, and had recently retired as the Eastern Region Manager for Delta Power.   He enjoyed flying, fishing, mechanical projects, and working on home construction projects.  When he lived in Germany, Mike also built and drove race cars.

Mike married Gloria J. Pawlendzio on June 9, 1970 and was married for 26 years. She predeceased him on July 25, 1996.  On June 30, 2000, he married Rebecca Russell of Houston, Texas. She survives him. Also surviving are his children: Lisa (Travis) Slater of Kalamazoo, Michael Carstens of Belding, and Rachel Carstens of Freeland; grandchildren Alex, Nicholas, and Kamryn Slater; his parents Calvin and Dorothy Carstens of Pinconning; brother Kenneth (KC) Carstens of Nixa, Missouri, and a sister Diane (Robert) Tomczak of Shepherd, Michigan. Mike is also survived by many nieces and nephews.

 There will be no visitation.  A private family memorial service will be held on Wednesday, December 20, at 2:00 p.m. at the Cunningham/Taylor Funeral Home, 310 E. Washington St., Freeland, Michigan.  The family asks that in lieu of flowers, donations be designated for the Travis Mills Foundation Retreat.
