Paul Franklin Walker

Birth: September 30th, 1960
Death: December 29th, 2017
Age: 57 years

Paul Franklin Walker, age 57, passed away peacefully at his home, surrounded by his family on December 29, 2017, following 9 years of living with ALS.  He was born on September 30, 1960 in Midland, Michigan to Robert and Shirley (Dennis) Walker.  On August 22, 1981, he married Leslie Huebner, his high school sweetheart.  After completing his optometry doctorate at Ferris State University, Paul worked for over 26 years as an optometrist, where he thoroughly enjoyed caring for his patients — demonstrated not only through good eye care, but also meaningful conversation.

Paul will be well-remembered for his thoughtfulness, taking the time to ask questions and carefully listen to the answers.  His quick wit, sharp mind and fun spirit permeated every conversation, mixing his gifts of humor, wisdom, and encouragement together so that each individual felt cared for.  Paul had the wonderful gift of providing wise counsel and genuine laughter, sharing great jokes with family and friends alike.

Paul’s many hobbies and interests included traveling the U.S. and Central America with family, golfing, volleyball, camping and fishing in Canada, deer and duck hunting, photography, enjoying home roasted coffees and teas, and spending quality time with family and friends. Music wasn’t just a hobby to Paul — it was a way to give to others.  In addition to the enjoyment he got from filling a room by listening to his favorite music on sizable speakers, he also shared his passion and talent with audio equipment as a member of the tech team at church.  Many times he shared “just the right song” to point others to God and encourage their faith.

Paul was a loyal contributing member of numerous organizations throughout his life.  Important to Paul were giving back and helping others; he did this through many avenues including his involvement in Community Bible Study and the Dow High School Athletic Booster Club.  He enjoyed being an active member of his church, bell ringing with Kiwasee Kiwanis, and going on many mission trips to provide eye care to the people of Costa Rica, El Salvador, Guatemala, Haiti, Honduras, Mexico, Panama, and Peru with great friends from Lions Club International.

Paul first encountered God and was nurtured in his faith through the community of Midland Nazarene, where he was active throughout his life and served on the church board, through singing, and on the tech team. We praise God that Paul’s life was marked by his faith in God, and he maintained great joy even amidst trials.

Paul will be remembered as a loving husband, devoted father, and faithful friend.  He is survived by his wife of 36 years, Leslie; daughter, Sarah, and son, Stephen; brother, Mark (Kim) Walker; and parents, Robert and Shirley Walker.

Funeral services will be held on Thursday, January 4, 2018 at 12:00 pm at Midland Nazarene Church (5700 Jefferson Ave), with visitation at 11:00 am — the Rev. Charles Jacobson officiating.  The family will also greet friends at Smith-Miner Funeral Home (2700 W Wackerly St) from 3:00 pm to 7:00 pm on Wednesday, January 3, 2018.

Memorial donations may be made to Midland Nazarene Church or Midland Kiwasee Kiwanis.

The Walker family is deeply grateful for the tender-loving care and support received from MidMichigan Home Care & Hospice and loving friends and family.
