Corbat, Lorna M (Gilles)

Freeland, Michigan

Passed away on December 31, 2017, after a short illness. Lorna was born in Saginaw on October 21, 1925, to Mattias and Anna (Bunek) Gilles, the youngest of their eleven children. After the deaths of her parents, Lorna was raised by her brother, Herbert, at the family home in Saginaw. Lorna graduated from the Cathedral of Mary of the Assumption High School in 1944 and was employed by Garber Automotive.  On November 9, 1946, at the Cathedral of Mary of the Assumption, Lorna married Mr. Jerome J. Corbat of Merrill, Michigan.  In 1950, they settled in Freeland, Michigan, where they raised their family.  Jerome preceded Lorna on April 12, 2008. Lorna was employed by the Freeland Community School District, working in the food services division.  She was a founding member of Freeland’s St. Agnes Catholic Church and its Altar Society.  One of the original residents of Freeland’s South Second Street, Lorna treasured marking milestones with her neighbors. While raising her family, Lorna was a homemaker who enjoyed gardening and raising flowers.   Ice cream was Lorna’s favorite treat and she was happiest when sharing it with her friends and family.  Lorna was an avid fan of Michigan State Spartans’ sports, especially Tom Izzo’s basketball teams.  Lorna enjoyed traveling with Jerome, visiting extended family, as well as playing cards. In addition to Jerome, Lorna was preceded by four sisters: Martha Peters, Dorothy Strasel, Helen Abernethy and Eleanor Gilles; six brothers: Frederick, Herbert, Ernest, Arthur, John and Ervin Gilles; daughter Mary Ann Corbat and son Jerome Corbat, Jr.; and dear, life-long friend, Jean (Crowley) Stuhler. Lorna is survived by one daughter, Lori (David) Appeldoorn of Holland, Michigan; three sons: Matthew (Christine) of Midland, Gerry of Grand Rapids, and Peter of Montgomery Village, Maryland; two granddaughters, Dawn O’Dell and Anna Appeldoorn; three grandsons, Richard (Christy) O’Dell, Ryer Appeldoorn and Kevin Corbat; two great-grandchildren, Zachary and Hope O’Dell; sisters-in-law Delores (Carl) Kocsis and Lucille Corbat; and many loving nieces and nephews.
