David passed away peacefully on Monday, January 1, 2018, at his home. He was 82 years old. David Boyd Doan was born on January 5, 1935, in Bay City to the late Boyce B. and Marguerite C. (Mulholland). David proudly served his country with the United States Army, 1st Cavalry Division, serving one tour during the Vietnam War and two tours in Korea. He then continued his service with the Army, spending nine years in Germany. David retired from the Army on January 31, 1975, as a Staff Sergeant. He returned to Bay City and worked for Conley Security and Rogers Hobby Shop in Saginaw. He enjoyed flying remote control model airplanes with the Frankenmuth Aeromodelers and also enjoyed fly fishing. David met the love of his life, Barbara A. (Dubay) Nichols and they were married on November 24, 2007, in Bay City. Together, David and Barb enjoyed camping in Michigan, and wintering in Tucson, Arizona. In 2013, they rescued Sid, their dear, furry canine companion. David was a very talented artist and enjoyed drawing lighthouses, still life and ships.

 

David’s memory will be forever cherished by his wife, Barb; children: Michael (Stormy) Doan, Renee (Kevin) Shabram, George (Susan) Doan and Craig (Sherry) Nichols; grandchildren: Victoria and Elizabeth Doan, Ashley (Trevor) Pilling-Miller, Andrew (Michelle) Kuhlman and Michael (Brandy) Nichols; great-grandchildren: Leeann Pilling-Miller, Elijah Doan and Bradyn Nichols; and a sister, Sharon (Donald) Kukla. David was preceded in death by his parents and his brother, Ronald (Helga) Doan.

 

The Funeral Liturgy and Rite of Committal will be celebrated on Monday, January 8, 2018 at 10:00 a.m. at Our Lady of Peace Parish – St. Mary’s Church. The celebrant will be Rev. Fr. Patrick M. Jankowiak. Burial with military honors will take place on Tuesday at 1:00 p.m. at Great Lakes National Cemetery, Holly, Michigan. Friends may visit with the family at the Gephart Funeral Home, Inc. on Sunday from 1:00 to 7:00 p.m. The vigil for the deceased will take place on Sunday at 6:00 p.m. at the funeral home. Mr. Doan will be taken to the church on Monday to lie in state from 9:00 a.m. until the time of the mass.
