Survived By: her husband Clifford of Midland; children Brenda (James) Dryer of Midland and Michael (Brenda) Mayers of Saginaw; grandchildren Matthew Dryer, Andrew Dryer, Jennifer (Matt) Mayers-Hucul, and Justine Mayers; and great grandchildren Gavin Wallace, Blake Mayers, Logan Dryer, and Hudson Mayers. She is also survived by her Siblings Gary, Barbara, and Tom.

Karen Helene Mayers, 79 of Midland, died Saturday morning, March 3, 2018 at Stone Crest Assisted Living in Freeland. She was born January 16, 1939 in Hancock, daughter of the late George and Helen (Risenen) Westerholm. She grew up in the Upper Peninsula where she met and later married Clifford Mayers on April 7, 1956. Together they moved to the Lower Peninsula spending 2 years in Detroit before settling in Midland in the early 1960s. At this point in time, Karen decided to go back to school and proudly earned her high school diploma from Midland High School. She was later employed by Midland Hospital as a Medical Records Administrator retiring after 28 years. Karen and Cliff enjoyed spending the winters in Florida where they would go dancing almost every Friday and Saturday night. She also loved traveling with her husband and was an avid fan of the Detroit Red Wings. Karen had a unique love of frogs and had quite a collection of “froggy” figurines.  She also had a knack for baking and will be remembered for her prune tarts, banana cake, and gum-drop cake.

 

Karen is survived by her husband Clifford of Midland; children Brenda (James) Dryer of Midland and Michael (Brenda) Mayers of Saginaw; grandchildren Matthew Dryer, Andrew Dryer, Jennifer (Matt) Mayers-Hucul, and Justine Mayers; and great grandchildren Gavin Wallace, Blake Mayers, Logan Dryer, and Hudson Mayers. She is also survived by her Siblings Gary, Barbara, and Tom. In addition to her parents, Karen was preceded in death by her daughter Debra Horner and brother Clayton.

 

Funeral services will take place 11 a.m. Thursday, March 8, 2018 from Trinity Lutheran Church, 3701 Jefferson Ave. Rev. Gerald Ferguson will officiate with burial to follow in Midland Cemetery. Her family will receive friends at Ware-Smith-Woolever Funeral Home on Wednesday from 4-8 p.m. and at the church on Thursday from 10 a.m. until the time of service. Those planning an expression of sympathy are asked to consider Trinity Lutheran Church or the Alzheimer’s Association.  The family would like to thank all the staff at Stone Crest Assisted Living and Elizabeth with The Care Team Hospice for all of the wonderful care and support given.
