Survived By: his wife Mary (Palmer) and his children Randolph (Debra) Bergstrom of Goleta, CA., Marcia Bergstrom of Minneapolis, MN., Matthew (Penny) Bergstrom of Elburn, IL, and Cindy (Cayce) Sowle of Beverly Hills, MI.; 8 grandchildren; and siblings Nancy (Ray) Cayemberg of Duluth,MN., Kathleen Murto of Green Bay, WI., Charles Bergstrom of Mountain Home, ID., and Joe (Nancy) Palmer of Midland, MI., as well many beloved nieces and nephews.

Donald Roger Bergstrom joined the church triumphant March 7th, 2018. Don was born on August 26, 1928 in Marquette, MI, the son of the late Emil and Agnes (Upstrom) Bergstrom. He graduated from Graverart High School in Marquette and went on to receive his Electrical Engineering degree at Michigan College of Mining and Technology in 1952.  He had a career in engineering at Dow Chemical and when he retired 42 years later, he was one of only 17 consultants for the Michigan Division. He was an Associate Materials Consultant.  Don married Mary Palmer on February 19, 1955, having met at the Midland Young Business People group.  Don and Mary recently celebrated 63 years of marriage. Don was a long time member of the Memorial Presbyterian Church and served in many roles including Sunday School Superintendent and Session Board Member. He worked for the Midland Center for Independent Living and spent time volunteering at the Midland Recyclers.  He enjoyed many types of music; he was a member of the Midland Men of Music (originally the Dow Male Chorus) for many years. He was inquisitive and loved to build, travel, and tinker. He was part of the Holiday Ramblers RV club and was an honorary life time member of the Midland Radio Control Modelers Club. Most of all he loved spending time with his children and grandchildren.

 

Surviving are his wife Mary (Palmer) and his children Randolph (Debra) Bergstrom of Goleta, CA., Marcia Bergstrom of Minneapolis, MN., Matthew (Penny) Bergstrom of Elburn, IL, and Cindy (Cayce) Sowle of Beverly Hills, MI.; 8 grandchildren; and siblings Nancy (Ray) Cayemberg of Duluth,MN., Kathleen Murto of Green Bay, WI., Charles Bergstrom of Mountain Home, ID., and Joe (Nancy) Palmer of Midland, MI., as well many beloved nieces and nephews. In addition to his parents, Don was predeceased by his granddaughter Cecelia Sowle, and his siblings Grace, Ralph, Russ, Floyd, Judy, and Jim.

 

Memorial Services for Don will take place at 2:00 p.m. Saturday March 10th at Ware-Smith Woolever Funeral Home, 1200 W. Wheeler St.in Midland. His family will receive friends before the service on Saturday, from 12 p.m. until the time of service. Those wishing to express their sympathy are asked to consider WCMU Public Media or the charity of their choice in Don’s memory.
