Richard O. Diment, 88 of Midland, passed away at Medilodge of Midland on Sunday, April 8, 2018.  He was born on September 3rd, 1929 in Geneva Township, the son of the late Vernell and Thelma (Sprenger) Diment.  “Dick” was married to Joan (Methner) on June 17th, 1951 in West Branch at the home of Joan’s uncle and aunt, the Reverend and Mrs. Ben Ouderkirk.

           

            He graduated from Coleman High School in 1947 and took a course at Michigan State University and was then employed by Robinson Industries. He served in the United States Army, during the Korean War, from 1951-1953.

           

            Dick’s first taste of public office came in 1959 when he was elected to the Board of Supervisors to represent the City of Coleman’s First Ward. He also worked for the City of Coleman in the Department of Public Works. Dick served on Coleman’s first ward on the Board of Supervisors in 1960. He was appointed to the Midland County Register of Deeds on May 21st 1968, upon the resignation of Charles Converse. Dick retired from the Register of Deeds office in 1992 after 24 years of service.

            Dick was involved in many activities throughout his life. He was a volunteer in the Webelo Pack as a troupe chairman, volunteer fireman, volunteer for the Coleman Little League, and an active member of the Faith United Methodist Church. Dick was also a member of the Coleman Jaycees and was presented the top citizen award. He was a mentor to Clarence Mumford and they were both honored with the Citizen’s Advocacy Relationship Award in 1983, which was sponsored by the ARC Resource Center. He also belonged to the Midland Kwanians club and supported the American Legion and Veterans of Foreign Wars.

           

            After retirement, Dick and Joan enjoyed winters in Florida for 20 years. He also enjoyed solving the world’s problems over coffee with his friends.

 

            He is survived by his wife, Joan Diment of Midland, Michigan; children Thomas (Pat) Diment of Riner, Virginia, Steven (Marina) Diment of Virginia Beach, Virginia, and William Diment of Midland, Michigan; seven grandchildren, Holly (Andy) Meyer, Chad (Jadelle) Diment, Alex (Valerie) Diment, Lindsey (Sean) Hanley, Tanner Diment, Haylee Diment and Sean Diment; five great-grandchildren Micah, Josh, Caleb, Joella and Koen. He is also survived by his brothers James (Thelma) Diment of Midland, Michigan and Robert (Beverley) Diment of Oscoda, Michigan.   Dick was preceded in death by his grandson Tyler Diment.  

 

 

A celebration of Dick’s life will be held 11:00 am Thursday April 12, 2018 at the Faith United Methodist Church in Coleman, with Rev. Nathan Reed officiating.  Friends may call at the church starting at 10 am until the time of services.  Memorials are suggested to the Donor’s Choice.  O’Laughlin Funeral Home, Inc. is assisting the family with arrangements.
