William Daniel Wilkie, 78, of Coleman passed away Saturday April 14, 2018 at home.  He was born January 7, 1940 in Clare, one of ten children born to the late George M. and Dorothy R. (Richmond) Wilkie.  The family moved from Clare to Coleman in 1945.  Bill lived his whole life in Coleman where he attended school, graduating in 1958 from the Coleman High School.  Bill was always interested in mechanics, building his own go-cart at 14-15 years of age.  When he was a teenager he worked at the bowling alley in Clare setting pins and he bought his first car.  After graduation, Bill worked for Acker’s Auto Repair Service and at the Chevrolet garage in Coleman.  Bill purchased the Speedway 79 Gas Station in Coleman in the 1960’s.  He changed the name and added more work space, renaming it Wilkie’s Repair Service.  He ran the business until he was struck down by illness in 2012.  After a failed back surgery, he was unable to walk and spent much time going around town, visiting friends while riding in his Hovaround.  When Bill was struck down by his illness, he was renovating a van, making it into a pick-up.  Bill was a well known mechanic all over Michigan with people bringing their vehicles to be fixed from Midland, Lansing, Flint, Detroit and other places.  Bill built and ran his own race car for several years.  Bill and his good friend Bill Whittington were a winning team.

Bill is survived by his sisters: Betty Spicer of Clio, Ila (Kay) Wilkie of Coleman, Gloria and Arnold Price of Evart, Bonnie Moore of Coleman, Dorothy (Dottie) and Rodney Colmus of Coleman and Marilyn Wilkie of Coleman, several nieces, nephews, great-nieces, great-nephews and a host of friends.  He was preceded in death by brothers: Raymond, Mitchell (Mick) and  Robert (Bob) Wilkie, two nieces, LaChelle Moore and Linda Sue Spicer.  Bill will be greatly missed.

Memorial services will be held 2:00 pm Wednesday April 18, 2018 at the Community of Christ Church, Coleman, with Evangelist Rodney Colmus officiating, with a luncheon to follow.  Friends may call at the church on Wednesday starting at 12 noon until the time of services.  Donations are suggested to the Coleman VFW Hall or a charity of the donor’s choice.  O’Laughlin Funeral Home, Inc. is assisting the family with arrangements.
