Donald Bruce “Don” Hays, 75 of Midland, died at his home Saturday, July 7, 2018 with his family at his side. He was born March 13, 1943 in Bay City, son of the late Deule and Mildred (Sickner) Hays, Sr. Even though he was born in Bay City, Don grew up in Midland. In 1960 when he was just 17, Don enlisted in the United States Army and served proudly for 3 years, being stationed in Germany. After his honorable discharge, Don went back to school and graduated from St. Louis High School. He began working as a contractor and was employed by Three Rivers Corporation and Don Varner Builders before branching out on his own. On June 16, 1976, he married the former Barbara Jean Eaton. Don was an amazing drafter whose artistic ability could only be rivaled by that of computer aided design software. Don was a true outdoorsman. He loved to hunt, go camping in the wilderness, and fish, especially for Walleye during his trips to Canada. Don also enjoyed his vehicles. He had numerous cars, bikes, and 4-wheelers that he would race. Don once won the 4-wheeler Cross Country Endurance Championship and also raced vehicles on ice. He also had his own monster truck in which he would go mudding and trail riding. In his free time, he would relax by watching NASCAR and hockey or he would pick up one of his accordions and play. There was no man on earth quite like Don Hays.

He is survived by his wife of 42 years, Barbara Jean Hays; sons Donald Hays II, Roger Hays, Gary Hays, and Donald J. Hays; daughters Linda Mac Donald, Carol (Cris) Taylor, Shawn (Terry) Bass, Lisa (Matthew) Grove, Rebecca (Steven) Church, and Amy Jo Hays; 23 grandchildren; 11 great grandchildren with one on the way; and 4 sisters. In addition to his parents, Don was preceded in death by 3 brothers, 1 sister, and his in-laws Henry and Anita Eaton.
