Melinda Johnston

Margaret Melina Johnston (Cooper) was born in Butler, PA on August 22, 1934 to Sarah Isabella Cooper (Jackson) and F. Leland Cooper. She passed away to be with Jesus Christ on September 12, 2018. Melinda excelled in her studies in high school and in music. She played clarinet in the marching band from the 7th through the 12th grade, played piano for singing groups, and sang in the chorus and other vocal groups. She graduated from Evans City High School, Evans City, PA as valedictorian and received a full scholarship to Lake Erie College for Women in Painesville, Ohio where she majored in medical technology. One of the highlights of her life was spending a term abroad in Germany. She interned at Allegheny General Hospital in Pittsburgh, PA. It was there that she met Sgt. Don Johnston and they were married at Shadyside Presbyterian Church on June 28, 1958. They celebrated their 60th Anniversary on June 28, 2018. They lived in various places and traveled extensively in retirement but their best memories were of the years spent in the Panama Canal Zone where Melinda worked as Gorgas Hospital. They came to Saginaw in 1969 and Melinda worked at St. Luke’s Hospital, Saginaw Osteopathic Hospital, and Saginaw Veterans Hospital. Melinda continued her music in the choirs at Michigan Avenue Baptist Church and later First Presbyterian Church of Saginaw. She also studied choral music under her good friend Anita Scherzer. She was a longtime member of the board of the Saginaw Valley Concert Association.


In addition to her husband, Donald Wilson Johnston, Melinda leaves two children, Donna McDaniel of Bay City and Thomas Johnston of Midland. She also leaves stepson, Dale Johnston of Florida, sister, Pam Hill of Florida, brother, Bill Cooper (Brenda) of Pennsylvania, grandchildren, Kelly Heinz (Brandon) of Saginaw and Jason Braun (Nicole) of Auburn, great grandchildren, Addisyn, Kaleb, Parker, and Emma Heinz, and Carter and Grace Braun.


Funeral services will be held 11AM, Wednesday, September 19, 2018 at the Reitz-Herzberg Funeral Home. Pastor Ted McCulloch officiating. Burial to follow in Lakefield Township Cemetery. Family will receive visitors at the funeral home on Tuesday from 5PM until 8PM and on Wednesday from 10AM until the time of service at 11AM. Memorial contributions may be made to First Presbyterian Church or the American Cancer Society.
