Richard Louis Hofmann, age 90, passed away peacefully in his home on Tuesday, November 6, 2018.

Born to Norbert and Eva Hofmann on July 8, 1928 in Detroit Michigan. He grew up in Belding Michigan with three other siblings. Pat (John) Strong and Mike Hofmann survive him. Larry Hofmann precedes him in death in 2014.

Dick married Joanne Esther Schrauben in 1953 and they had 56 wonderful years together until her death in 2009. All of their children survive them. His daughters Phyllis Sabourin and Marcy Woodrow were his primary caregivers along with McLaren Hospice up until his passing. The rest of the siblings pay the caregivers tribute knowing that he had the best and most loving care we all could have ever hoped for.

Dad is survived by Phyllis Sabourin and her children Tom (Megan), Becky, and Kendra. Steven & Beth Hofmann and their children Wayne (Cadia) and Kate (Jeff) O’Shea. John & Jean Hofmann and their sons Jason and Matthew. Marcy Woodrow and her children Kelly (Glen) Booth, Joshua (Barbara), and Jacob (Caitlyn). Brian & Jackie Hofmann of Missouri and his sons Kenny and Quinn. Janet (George) Twigg and their three children Chelsey Sikorski, Susan (Michael) Patterson, and Alex. His fourth son Doug & Mary Ann Hofmann of Kentucky. Pat & Darcy Hofmann of Arizona along with Brandi (Chris) Williams, Trisha (Jason) Miller, and Christopher. Preceded in death is step grandson, Jeff Kreska. His ninth child Mary Beth Hofmann. Kevin and Lisa Hofmann of Georgia and their children Isabel, Conner, Jacob, and Sam. All of these unions have thus far produced a legacy of many great-grandchildren. He is also survived by sisters-in-law Bernita (Schrauben) Miller and Mary Ann (Schrauben) Hoy and numerous nieces and nephews.

A veteran, he served in the Army during the Korean War. He joined the Michigan State Police in 1954 shortly after his marriage to Joanne. His career in the Michigan State Police had the family in many locations throughout the state. Prior to his retirement in 1978 he was assigned to the Bay City Post where he worked as Detective Sergeant in the Arson Division of MSP. He was State Fire Marshal for 12 years. Two Meritorious Service Awards were awarded during his service to the State of Michigan. After retiring Richard then worked as head of security for Consumers Energy at the Karn Weadock Plant for over 10 years. He also continued to investigate fires for insurance companies as a private investigator for many years.

After retirement both Joanne and Dick traveled to visit children in various locations. Dad loved hunting & golfing, woodworking & refinishing vintage furniture, gardening, and tending his fruit trees throughout his life.

A memorial service is planned at Rivertown Funeral Chapel in Kawkawlin, MI on Tuesday, November 13th from 3pm-4pm with visiting hours starting at 11am and ending at 6pm.
