Leslie O. "Les" Gray

Les passed away on Thursday January 10, 2019 at home with his family at his side, age 84. He passed from a long battle with COPD. He fought the disease with grace and never complained. He was born on September 17, 1934 the son of the late Edward and Hazel (Hough) Gray. Les resided in the area all of his life. He was a member of Grace Lutheran Church in Auburn and the Brick Layers and Allied Craftsmen Local 2 of Michigan. He was a plasterer by trade for 42 years. He loved what he did until the day he retired. Les enjoyed time with his family. He loved to be surrounded by family and friends. He enjoyed golf, fishing and especially hunting at their camp in Marquette. He cherished time spent with his sons, brothers, nephews and friends at camp. On April 14, 1956 he married the former Shirley A. Schmidt and she survives him. Their marriage was blessed with one daughter and three sons. Lori (Mark-deceased) Ruthruff, Bay City, Todd and Denise Gray, Auburn, Ned and Cathy Gray, Midland and Dean Gray, Midland, five grandchildren; Dana and Kyle Stinnett of Las Vegas, NV., Jack and Mackenzie Ruthruff, Linwood, Emily Gray, Jennie and Bill Thick, Bay City and Katie and Andy Freehling, Auburn. As well as eight great-grandchildren, Arlen, Brock, Skylar, Kaylee, Avery, Levi, Fenton and Carson. Les is survived by his sister; Hazel Kish, sisters in-law; Marion Gray, Rita Gray, Sharon Hignite, Anne Schmidt and sister in-law and brother in-law; Dolores and John Guettler and many nieces and nephews. Les was also welcomed home by his seven brothers and their wives, Edward, Francis and Eleanor, Albert and Gertrude, Charles, James and Jayne, Harry, Robert and brothers in-law; Ernest Kish and Ike Schmidt.

 

Funeral services will be held 11:00 a.m. Monday January 14, 2019 at Grace Lutheran Church (Price and Ruth Streets) Auburn. Rev. Aaron T. Schian will officiate. Burial will take place 2:00 p.m. Monday afternoon in Fremont Cemetery.  Les’s family will receive friends at the Auburn Chapel of the Cunningham-Taylor Funeral Homes, Inc. on Sunday from 2:00-8:00 p.m. On Monday Les will lie in state at the church from 10:00 a.m. until time of service. Those plann- ing an expression of sympathy, envelopes for Grace Lutheran Church (Auburn) Memorial Fund and the Toni & Trish House (Fisherville) will be available.
